Apple is set to gain an observer role on OpenAI’s board as part of a new AI agreement that was announced last month. Reported by Bloomberg News on Tuesday via Reuters, marks a notable collaboration between the two tech giants.

Phil Schiller, the head of Apple’s App Store and its former marketing chief, has been chosen for the observer position. This board arrangement will take effect later this year, although Schiller has not yet attended any meetings, according to the report.

An observer role allows an individual to attend board meetings without voting rights or other powers typically held by directors. With that said, observers can gain valuable insights into the decision-making processes of the company.

Neither Apple nor OpenAI provided comments when contacted by Reuters regarding this new development. This move follows Apple’s recent announcement in June about integrating OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, into its devices. This integration aims to enhance Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” technology, which will be embedded across its suite of apps, including the virtual assistant Siri.

The integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s ecosystem is expected to bring advanced AI capabilities to its users, offering more personalized and intelligent interactions with Apple devices. This also step aligns with Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience through AI solutions that cater to its consumer base.

Earlier in March, OpenAI announced the appointment of new directors to its board. This includes notable figures such as CEO Sam Altman, Sue Desmond-Hellmann, a former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, a former president of Sony Entertainment, and Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart.

These appointments are part of OpenAI’s strategy to strengthen its leadership and governance within the growing AI market ecosystem while pushing forward with its AI research and applications.

For Apple, this partnership could the company maintain its market share. This is an increasing worry as main rival Samsung has pushed heavily into AI with its latest models. For OpenAI, having Apple involved helps to cement its position as a major player in the AI sphere and outside of it.
