After months of comments, Elon Musk announced the formation of a new AI company called xAI. The Twitter owner and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX unveiled a new website for the new AI company. In it, the site shows off a new team of staffers which will be led by Musk himself.
According to the website, xAI “will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission…The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe.” Though Elon Musk was an early backer of OpenAI, they parted ways due to the direction.
Part of the divide between Musk and OpenAI is due to certain safeguards put in place by the AI startup as a means to control unwanted content from being generated. While speaking with Tucker Carlson back in April, Musk teased plans for a new AI startup. “We’re going to start something which I call TruthGPT.” Continuing Musk said, described it as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that “cares about understanding the universe.”
All of this comes as Musk and other tech leaders warned of the potential dangers of AI. While some focused on the impact on the labor market and how it could permanently displace workers. He saw uncontrolled AI as being able to cause, “civilization destruction.” This is why he signed on with other tech leaders asking for a pause in the development of LLMs more powerful than GPT4.
So far, there aren’t too many other details related to xAI, such as current projects. And the website did not have a mission statement yet, it does appear to be actively recruiting talent. The team it does have on display comes from some of the top companies in the field such as Google AI, Microsoft Research, and OpenAI to name a few.
Of course, xAI does have its own Twitter account and will likely be where most of the latest information can be found.
