While speaking with The New Yorker, Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage expressed his apprehensions about the use of AI in Hollywood. A topic on which he has not shied away from voicing his opinions.

The conversation took a brief pause when Cage was reminded by his publicist about his schedule, which included scans for upcoming projects—a testament to the increasing intersection of technology and performance art in the film industry.

Cage’s view of AI

Cage, who is slated to appear in the much-anticipated Spider-Man Noir live-action series, shared his experiences with the digital scanning processes used in modern filmmaking. “I have to slip out after this to go get a scan done for the show, and then also for the movie I’m doing after the show. Two scans in one day!“.

His tone was light but carried a note of resignation as he joked about the invasive nature of these technologies. “Well, they have to put me in a computer and match my eye color and change—I don’t know,” he explained. “They’re just going to steal my body and do whatever they want with it via digital… God, I hope not AI. I’m terrified of that.

The actor’s concern extends beyond the mere application of AI in Hollywood. Cage pondered the philosophical implications of such technologies, particularly their impact on artistic integrity and personal legacy. “And it makes me wonder, you know, where will the truth of the artists end up? Is it going to be replaced? Is it going to be transmogrified? Where’s the heartbeat going to be?“.

Questioning earnestly. “I mean, what are you going to do with my body and my face when I’m dead? I don’t want you to do anything with it!

Tom Hanks and Keanu Reeves Talk AI

Over the last two years other major actors have also chimed in about AI. On one end, is Tom Hanks. Another Oscar-winner, Hanks on a podcast mentioned AI as an inevitably. Something that concerns him but also is too likely to become a reality in Hollywood.

Then, there’s John Wick star Keanu Reeves. For Keanu he takes a more active role in resisting AI in his films; even going so far as to ink agreements that prohibit pre and post production use of the technology.

So as we can see, Cage’s discourse not only highlights the technical advancements in film production but also invites a broader discussion about the ethical boundaries of such technologies. He, like others, show that there is a need for ongoing dialogue between technology and humans using it.
