The annual Bilderberg Meeting, a gathering renowned for its secrecy and high-profile attendees, is set to commence in Madrid on Thursday and will include the CEOs of major AI-focused companies, including Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and Mistral AI.

According to CNBC, these tech leaders will join an elite group of business and political figures to discuss a range of global issues that of course include AI. As one can imagine, AI is a dominant topic in recent years, and will once again be a focal point of the discussions.

In addition to AI executives, the event will feature a roster of influential business leaders such as Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Shell CEO Wael Sawan, and investor Peter Thiel.

The meeting will also host significant political figures, including U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. All of this shows how the meeting has become a multi-domain affair with leaders from across industries and within the public and private sectors.

The report states that the gathering, attended by around 130 participants,  and will mark the 70th anniversary of the Bilderberg Meeting. This year’s event will run from Thursday to Sunday in the Spanish capital.

Notorious for its confidentiality, the meeting is held under Chatham House rules, the identities and affiliations of speakers are not disclosed, and the content of the discussions is not reported in the media. According to the organizers, this closed format is intended to promote “informal discussions about major issues.”

For this year, the organizers released key topics for the 2024 meeting, offering a glimpse into the most pressing issues on the international agenda related to AI. Some of these topics include:

  • State of AI
  • AI safety
  • Changing faces of biology
  • Geopolitical landscape

The discussions on AI are particularly timely, given the significant advancements in large language models over the past year. These developments have sparked debates about privacy, workforce implications, and broader societal impacts.

For those who may be unaware, in 1954, the Bilderberg Meeting were establish. The goal of the event is to foster dialogue between Europe and North America. Participants, about two-thirds from Europe and the rest from North America, represent a mix of political and governmental leaders and professionals from other fields.

Attendees participate as individuals rather than in any official capacity, allowing for candid discussions without the constraints of their official roles. “There is no detailed agenda, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements are issued,”.

It’s clear that with AI as part of some of the agenda at this year’s meeting, leaders across the globe are hoping to better understand how to best utilize the technology.
