I most often take a specific approach to data analytics which is best described as Behavioral Data Science. It encompasses a combination of human expert knowledge with the speed and processing power of machine learning algorithms, applied over large data sets. In a typical application, human experts/system users provide the semantic tagging of necessary information, or expert judgments via some standardized framework. Human knowledge is then combined with the outputs of machine learning algorithms applied over large data sets in order to produce knowledge models: the information structures that are used to draw predictions and further inferences upon newly acquired data.
